The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 110,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the commune that grew up in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless alleged witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit several times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, primarily because of its close proximity to London, plus its superb road and rail links.
