The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the commune that developed in the vicinity of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, although it remains a thriving and growing town today, primarily due to its closeness to London, plus the terrific road and rail communications.
