The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the community which grew up in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading instigators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many assumed witches.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, mainly because of its closeness to the capital, plus its superb rail and road links.
