The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the commune that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless presumed witches.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, making products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its factories went bust, though it is still a thriving and booming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding road and rail links.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
