Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry closed, though it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.
