The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the commune that evolved around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its factories closed, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the terrific road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
