A Saxon settlement followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its production facilities went bust, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus the good rail and road links.

The town is situated near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
