Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a populace of approximately 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck a number of times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry closed, even so it still is a thriving and growing town today, for the most part due to its nearness to the city of london, and its terrific rail and road connections.

The town is positioned adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
