Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of some 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the settlement that grew up in the locality of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed, but it remains a successful and booming town today, primarily because of its nearness to London, plus the first rate rail and road links.

The town sits adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
