River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a vital industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its factories closed down, nonetheless it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to the closeness to the capital, plus the first rate road and rail communications.

The town is positioned adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
