The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.
