The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the village that grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were accordingly put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many presumed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a vital industrial town during the 19th century, producing goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit several times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry closed, all the same it remains a thriving and developing town today, predominantly due to its closeness to London, and its first class road and rail links.
