Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of about 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were later executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous alleged witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.
