Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,500 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment which developed surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main instigators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline during the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it still is a flourishing and booming town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the capital, and its terrific rail and road communications.
