The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the town that evolved around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town in the 19th century, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its manufacturing facilities closed, even so it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, principally because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its first rate road and rail communications.
