The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the settlement that developed surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main instigators were ultimately executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many suspected witches.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry went bust, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, principally due to its proximity to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail connections.

The town is located beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
