Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the town which expanded in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry closed down, though it still is a successful and blooming town today, mostly due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its excellent road and rail connections.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
