Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were later executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous presumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its manufacturers went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part because of its closeness to the capital, and its excellent rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is found beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about twenty six kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
