The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of approximately 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately 111,500 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were accordingly executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th century, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.
