The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 110,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the encampment that evolved around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit several times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into significant decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industries ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, largely due to its proximity to London, plus the outstanding rail and road connections.
