The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the settlement which grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a significant industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its plants shut down, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its terrific road and rail communications.
