Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the encampment which expanded round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading agitators were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its production facilities closed, though it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, predominantly due to its closeness to the city of london, and its excellent rail and road communications.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
