The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the village which grew up in the locality of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous suspected witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it remains a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its terrific road and rail communications.

The town lies near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 16 mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
