The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the village that evolved surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were later executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such items as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its manufacturing facilities went bust, in spite of this it is still a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to the nearness to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail links.

The town lies near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
