The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading agitators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many presumed witches.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, making items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its manufacturers went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, mainly due to its proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is positioned adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London.
