Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading culprits were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.
