Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

A Saxon community came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous presumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.
