Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from central London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the community that grew up in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industrial facilities closed, though it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily due to the proximity to London, and its superb road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is located adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
