The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, around 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of some 111,500 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the town that developed in the vicinity of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its manufacturers shut down, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the first rate rail and road connections.
