Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of around 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize.
