Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the town which expanded around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many suspected witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck several times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it still is a successful and growing town today, predominantly due to its proximity to London, and its excellent rail and road communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
