The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of roughly 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the encampment which expanded in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were later executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry shut down, though it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, principally due to the closeness to the city of london, and the outstanding road and rail communications.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
