Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the community that expanded in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless assumed witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a vital industrial town in the 19th C, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its manufacturers shut down, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, principally due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus its exceptional road and rail connections.

Chelmsford sits beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
