A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the 19th century, crafting goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to the closeness to the city of london, and its outstanding rail and road links.
