River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the commune that grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless suspected witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry went bust, though it is still a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to its close proximity to London, and its good rail and road communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
