The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the village which grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous supposed witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, because much of its factories closed, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, largely due to its close proximity to the capital, plus the first rate rail and road links.

The town is set beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 26 kilometers from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
