Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 110,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the settlement that evolved round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless assumed witches.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, making products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industries ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a flourishing and booming town today, mainly due to its closeness to London, plus its superb rail and road links.

The town can be found near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
