Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of around thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the commune that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many supposed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, making items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily because of its closeness to the city of london, and the exceptional rail and road communications.

The town is found close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
