An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a significant industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its industrial facilities closed, all the same it is still a thriving and booming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, plus its superb rail and road connections.
