Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the village which grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were ultimately put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a serious manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industries closed, though it still is a successful and blooming town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its good rail and road links.

The town is located just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
