An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many supposed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through considerable decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, in spite of this it remains a successful and developing town today, principally because of its proximity to the city of london, and the excellent road and rail links.
