A Saxon community followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless presumed witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its manufacturing facilities shut down, but it remains a successful and growing town today, for the most part due to the nearness to London, plus the excellent rail and road links.

The town lies close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
