The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of about 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.
