The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of about 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the town which developed in the area of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous alleged witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and booming town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, plus its first rate rail and road connections.

The town is set just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital.
