Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the town that grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry shut down, in spite of this it remains a successful and booming town today, largely due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail communications.
