Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the commune which evolved round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected witches.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a serious manufacturing town during the 19th C, making items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, mainly due to its nearness to London, and its good road and rail communications.

Chelmsford stands just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 16 mls from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
