The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the village which evolved in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many suspected witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its manufacturers went bust, though it continues to be a successful and developing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to London, and its first class road and rail links.

The town sits just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
