The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of around 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless alleged witches.
