The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of approximately 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

A Saxon community followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were later hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit many times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.
