Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the town that grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, producing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck several times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, largely due to its proximity to London, plus its quality road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is located close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 16 mls from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
