Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its industries went bust, though it is still a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly due to the closeness to London, and the first class road and rail links.
