Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of some 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the village which evolved around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its production facilities went bust, though it remains a successful and developing town today, for the most part because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its first class rail and road communications.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
