The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the community that evolved around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly due to its closeness to London, and its first rate road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is set close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
