The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of roughly 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a population of some 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the town which expanded in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, crafting items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus its good road and rail communications.
