Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless assumed witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to its closeness to the city of london, and its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town is found near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
