Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly the 1st century AD, and the town which developed round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main agitators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a considerable industrial town during the 19th C, making products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly due to its nearness to the city of london, and the first rate rail and road connections.

The town is situated close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 26 km car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
