The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry shut down, though it remains a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to its proximity to London, plus the terrific road and rail communications.
