The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the village that expanded round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a significant industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly due to its proximity to London, and its first class road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is situated just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
