Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the town that grew up in the locality of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading instigators were thereafter hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, principally due to its close proximity to the city of london, and the outstanding road and rail connections.

The town is situated beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
