The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into considerable decline during the 1980's, because much of its factories went bust, even so it is still a successful and developing town today, mainly due to its nearness to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail links.
