The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of around 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the commune which expanded surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the 1980's, because much of its plants ceased to be profitable, all the same it is still a successful and growing town today, predominantly due to its closeness to the capital, and its good rail and road communications.
