Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of approximately thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the encampment which grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town in the 19th C, producing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the quality rail and road communications.

The town is positioned adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London.
