River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading instigators were ultimately hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, crafting items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its production facilities shut down, though it still is a successful and blooming town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the superb rail and road connections.

The town is situated close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 26 kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
