The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, since much of its production facilities shut down, yet it remains a thriving and developing town today, largely because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the outstanding road and rail connections.
