Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of about 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,500 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the community which developed surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the occupants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading agitators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its plants went bust, even so it is still a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to London, plus its excellent road and rail communications.

The town is found close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
