The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were consequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many supposed witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit many times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry shut down, all the same it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the city of london, and its terrific rail and road communications.
