The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, around 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of around 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the commune that expanded round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its industry went bust, although it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the excellent road and rail communications.

The town is positioned beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
