Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the community which grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous supposed witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, when much of its manufacturing plants closed, although it still is a successful and growing town today, primarily due to the nearness to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail communications.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
