The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the community that evolved round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a significant industrial town during the nineteenth century, crafting items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its plants went bust, even so it still is a flourishing and growing town today, primarily because of its closeness to London, and the terrific road and rail communications.

The town is situated near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
