The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the encampment that grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were ultimately put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many suspected witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, producing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, mostly due to its proximity to London, and its good road and rail communications.

The town stands beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
