Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of some 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the commune that grew up around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were ultimately hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, producing such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into serious decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its manufacturers closed down, even so it remains a thriving and blooming town today, primarily because of its closeness to the city of london, and its excellent road and rail communications.

The town is set close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
