Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the town which expanded round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were consequently hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many suspected witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its manufacturing facilities shut down, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to its nearness to the capital, plus its exceptional rail and road connections.

The town is situated near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 km drive from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
