The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of some 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which expanded around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses.
