Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into substantial decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its industry shut down, but it is still a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, plus the terrific rail and road communications.
