Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two mls from central London. The town has a populace of roughly 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

An Anglo Saxon camp followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were later executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, making goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.
