Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of roughly 32 mls from central London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the community which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were later executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless suspected witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry closed, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to the close proximity to London, plus its first rate rail and road communications.

The town sits close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
