Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the community which grew up in the locality of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a significant manufacturing town during the 19th century, making such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and growing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to the capital, and the good road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 16 mls from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
