The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry closed down, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, largely due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its exceptional rail and road communications.
