Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the encampment that evolved around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit several times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it is still a successful and growing town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, and its excellent rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is set near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 16 mls from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
