A Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into significant decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its factories ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, principally due to its proximity to London, and its excellent road and rail connections.
