Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the village that evolved surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the residents of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading culprits were later executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into considerable decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its industry closed down, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the city of london, and its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town lies close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 16 miles from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
