Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, around thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the town that grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were thereafter executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th C, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industrial facilities shut down, even so it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, mostly because of its closeness to London, plus the superb road and rail links.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
