Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, about 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of some 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the settlement which expanded surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and growing town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to the capital, and the good rail and road connections.

The town is situated beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 26 kilometres from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
