Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from central London. The town has got a population of approximately 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the community which grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industrial facilities closed down, in spite of this it still is a thriving and developing town today, primarily due to its close proximity to London, plus the first rate rail and road communications.
