The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the encampment that grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, because much of its industries shut down, even so it continues to be a successful and growing town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the capital, and the terrific rail and road communications.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
