A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the 1980's, since much of its industrial facilities closed, though it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily due to the close proximity to London, and the first rate rail and road connections.
