Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of approximately 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a populace of around 110,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the settlement that evolved in the locality of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its industry closed, even so it remains a flourishing and booming town today, for the most part due to the nearness to London, and its first rate road and rail connections.

The town stands near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen miles from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
