Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of some 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many assumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the 19th century, making such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its factories closed, even so it remains a thriving and developing town today, mainly because of its closeness to London, plus the good rail and road communications.

The town is set beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
