The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of roughly 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many supposed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a considerable manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industries shut down, but it remains a thriving and developing town today, predominantly due to its closeness to the capital, plus the first rate road and rail links.
