Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the citizens of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a successful and developing town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the capital, plus the terrific road and rail communications.
