Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of roughly 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the village that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a serious manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it remains a thriving and growing town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, and the exceptional rail and road links.

The town stands beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
