Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the settlement that grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a significant manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry went bust, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, principally because of its closeness to London, plus the first class road and rail communications.

The town is positioned close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital.
