The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of roughly thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the town which expanded around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were thereafter put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a vital manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry closed down, even so it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the capital, and the quality rail and road communications.

The town sits near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 26 kilometers from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
