Chelmsford is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were later executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry went bust, in spite of this it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus its outstanding road and rail connections.

The town stands beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
