Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the commune which evolved in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main agitators were accordingly hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the 19th C, making such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its exceptional rail and road links.
