The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the encampment which grew up in the area of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were consequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless suspected witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities closed down, though it remains a flourishing and developing town today, largely due to the proximity to the capital, plus its first class rail and road communications.

The town stands just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
