Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of around 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the village which grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a significant industrial town during the 19th C, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its production facilities closed, but it is still a flourishing and growing town today, mainly due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its first rate road and rail links.
