The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the settlement which expanded round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a vital industrial town in the 19th C, crafting such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses.
