Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the commune that expanded surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous assumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a significant manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit many times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry closed, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, principally due to its proximity to the capital, plus its quality road and rail connections.

The town is positioned near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
