The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of around 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless suspected witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a significant manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its manufacturers closed down, even so it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part because of its closeness to the capital, and the first rate rail and road communications.

Chelmsford sits adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six kilometers car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London.
