Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading culprits were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly due to the closeness to London, and its excellent road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is positioned just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 km from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
