The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such items as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industry closed down, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the city of london, and its first rate road and rail links.

Chelmsford is found near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
