Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of approximately 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.
